00:08 hi everybody jonathan gallow here
00:10 and on today's episode we're going to
00:12 talk about prioritizing cyber security
00:14 in a hybrid workplace
00:17 the past year and a half
00:19 employees have become more connected
00:20 than ever
00:21 the hybrid workplace is clearly here to
00:23 stay and for employees this means
00:25 relying on connected devices from their
00:27 home offices
00:29 now according to some recent data i read
00:31 smart home systems are set to rise to a
00:33 market value of 157 billion dollars by
00:37 2023
00:38 and the number of installed connected
00:40 devices in the home is expected to rise
00:42 by a staggering 70 percent by 2025.
00:46 in this new normal where smart devices
00:50 and online safety are a must here are
00:52 some tips for securing those devices
00:55 remember that smart devices need smart
00:57 security
00:58 and it's important to make cyber
01:00 security a priority when purchasing a
01:02 connected device
01:03 when setting up a new device
01:05 you got to remember to set up the
01:07 privacy and security settings on web
01:09 services
01:10 and devices keeping in mind that you can
01:12 limit who you're sharing information
01:14 with
01:15 and once your device is set up remember
01:17 to keep track of the security of the
01:19 information you store on the device and
01:21 to actively manage location services so
01:24 you don't unwittingly expose your
01:26 location
01:28 next put cyber security first on your
01:30 job make it a priority when you're
01:32 brought into a new role
01:34 good online hygiene should be part of
01:36 any organization's onboarding process
01:38 but if it's not take it upon yourself to
01:41 exercise best practices to keep your
01:42 company safe
01:44 and some practices include performing
01:46 regular software updates and patching
01:48 enabling multi-factor authentication and
01:51 guarding against phishing scams
01:53 listen to some other podcasts we've
01:55 presented on these topics
01:58 make your passwords and pass phrases
02:00 strong as well
02:02 secure passwords or phrases are
02:04 essential so even if the website you're
02:06 on doesn't require it be sure to combine
02:08 capital and lowercase letters with
02:10 numbers and symbols to create more
02:12 secure passwords and don't ever use the
02:14 same password across accounts generic
02:17 passwords are easy to hack
02:19 and if you need help remembering and
02:21 storing your passwords
02:23 don't hesitate to turn to a password
02:25 manager for assistance
02:27 also
02:28 never use public computers to log into
02:30 any accounts
02:32 while working from home you may be
02:34 tempted to change the scenery and work
02:36 from a coffee shop or another area of
02:38 public space with free wi-fi
02:41 while that's a great way to keep the day
02:42 from becoming monotonous you got to use
02:45 caution to protect yourself and your
02:46 company
02:48 make sure that the security is at the
02:49 top of your mind always especially while
02:52 working in a public setting by keeping
02:54 activities as generic and anonymous as
02:56 possible and utilize a virtual private
02:59 network when engaging any company in any
03:02 company business
03:04 and finally turn off wi-fi and bluetooth
03:07 when idle
03:08 the uncomfortable truth is when wi-fi
03:10 and bluetooth are on they can connect
03:12 and track your whereabouts
03:14 to stay as safe as possible if you don't
03:16 need them switch them off it's a simple
03:18 step that can help alleviate tracking
03:20 concerns and incidents
03:22 now these are just a few simple steps
03:24 toward achieving the best online safety
03:26 possible
03:27 staying safe online is an active process
03:29 that requires constant overseeing at
03:32 every stage
03:33 from purchasing and setting up a device
03:35 to making sure that your day-to-day
03:37 activities are not putting anyone at
