Why Your Network Must Be Scalable & Sustainable Now
A scalable and sustainable network infrastructure is no longer optional—it’s a necessity.
Why Sustainability Matters in Networking:
At Juniper Networks, we’ve been building innovative network solutions for over 20 years.
Today, businesses must consider not just performance but also energy efficiency, carbon impact, and automation.
You’ll learn
How your enterprise can reduce energy consumption with automation
How to optimize network performance while lowering carbon emissions
How you can leverage AI-native tools like Apstra and Mist AI for efficiency

0:00 how to get a statable and sustainable
0:02 Network infrastructure I'm here with
0:04 Neil McCrae Chief networks strategist at
0:07 uniper networks we're here at Mobile
0:09 World Congress it's great to be here
0:11 thank you for inviting me and to answer
0:14 this this question maybe you can explain
0:16 a little bit what does it mean catable
0:18 and sustainable how to to get such a
0:21 network infrastructure yes so Luke
0:23 Juniper we've been building networks for
0:25 over 20 years we're a leader in our
0:27 space and what's become important for
0:29 customers is building networks that not
0:31 only fit the purpose of functionality
0:33 but fit the purpose of uh sustainability
0:37 so how much energy is it using how much
0:39 carbon is it creating um and and not
0:42 just the network itself but the entire
0:44 process from you know how we box
0:47 components what materials we use uh but
0:49 also in the technology that we use
0:51 including you know our silicon um and
0:53 how we put that together to create a
0:55 sustainable platform but then also
0:58 ensuring that customers have visibility
1:00 of you know what energy and they're
1:03 using and how they might optimize that
1:05 for their use cases um in that process
1:09 we're using a lot of automation because
1:11 trying to do this manually is almost
1:12 impossible and we've got our tool abstra
1:15 together with our Mist AI that allows us
1:17 to see what energy you're using to be
1:19 able to tailor it but also to do
1:21 important things like flag that actually
1:23 this this part of the network is not in
1:25 use we're going to we're going to wind
1:26 it down we're going to turn it down
1:27 we're not going to use it because you
1:29 don't need it right right now but then
1:31 be able to scale up in a way that's
1:33 sustainable for your you know it could
1:35 be for your AI application or it could
1:37 be for a special event that you've got
1:40 App Store will allow you to scale out
1:42 the network for the OnDemand uh um use
1:45 cases that you may have mhm and can you
1:48 give some examples from either use cases
1:50 or from client cases yeah so we have a
1:52 we have a customer we work with in the
1:54 UK and and they do a lot of work with
1:56 educational
1:57 organizations and exam times is a busy
2:00 time for them so they need to scale up
2:01 their capability during exam times to
2:04 create to create the exams to mark them
2:06 to track them uh and also a lot of exams
2:09 today in in in universities and such are
2:11 actually online so you're you need you
2:13 need a capability to be able to run that
2:15 so they are using our platform at exam
2:18 time to kind of spool up their uh
2:20 compute capability their networking
2:22 capability and to connect all
2:23 universities across the country so just
2:26 use as they need it but don't spill any
2:28 energy any absolutely and and and be
2:31 able to give their users on demand
2:34 capability without using you know an
2:37 energy that isn't there I mean I you
2:39 know back in the early days of the
2:40 internet when when I when I was building
2:42 the internet you know we just left
2:43 everything on those days just you know
2:45 you just can't operate like that it's
2:46 expensive it's it's not great for the
2:48 environment um and also for customers
2:52 increasingly our customers are are
2:54 facing regulation around what CO2 are
2:56 generating so we need to be able to
2:58 actually show them in our Network
3:01 actually here's how much here's how much
3:02 CO2 you're using so that they can report
3:05 effectively and so that they can manage
3:06 their own their own um environment um
3:09 what's crucial to that are some of the
3:10 technology developments that we're doing
3:13 we our new silicon is um far less power
3:16 hungry it's got a huge number of
3:18 capabilities to optimize power and to
3:20 turn parts of the Silicon off when you
3:22 don't need it um we're building things
3:24 into routing protocols so that you can
3:27 actually take the most low energy path
3:30 through a network these are standards
3:31 that we're working on with the wider
3:32 Community but we're really focused on
3:34 building the network that gives you the
3:37 scill you need when you need it but in a
3:40 sustainable way and what kind of tips do
3:42 you have for all the Watchers that are
3:44 thinking about it but not doing it yet
3:47 yeah I mean I think I think you know
3:49 this has to form a part of your overall
3:52 strategy I see many customers trying to
3:54 kind of Bolt it on top so we have this
3:57 um what we call Network modernization so
4:01 in that Network modernization toolkit
4:04 there's automation there's
4:07 sustainability there's new features and
4:08 functionality and and and for many at
4:11 least on the service provider side
4:13 creating new services and we see that as
4:15 a as a kind of parcel of network
4:17 Evolution and then bringing Ai and
4:19 automation as as a kind of a layer on
4:21 that that Ai and automation allows you
4:23 to do those four things um I've seen a
4:26 lot of customers try to do this manually
4:28 with Excel spread sheets and stuff like
4:30 that honestly that just doesn't work
4:33 it's you might get the first picture but
4:35 but trying to maintain it uh so you know
4:38 I would say automation is critical I
4:40 would say look at this as a strategic
4:42 component of your overall Network
4:43 strategy um and also experiment um we're
4:47 experimenting with liquid based
4:49 Technologies as well you know air
4:51 cooling is probably not the future so
4:53 how do you bring that experimentation
4:55 into your strategy and the only way you
4:57 can understand building a strategy like
4:59 that is to try it and actually we you
5:01 know that's where we come in we work
5:02 with many customers to help them build
5:04 that strategy so that not only do they
5:06 have a a network that's that's right for
5:08 their customers it gives them the great
5:09 experience it's automated it's
5:11 sustainable and and it's got the the the
5:14 return that they're going to need as a
5:15 service provider um to to create the new
5:18 services that customers want Neil great
5:20 tips and for everybody is's watching
5:23 here from mwc thank you for watching and
5:25 we're looking forward to that you follow
5:28 these type of great tips and looking for
5:29 forward to seeing you next time
5:30 brilliant thank you thanks
