00:00 - There's nothing more annoying for me and my staff
00:02 than troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues.
00:03 So, when Juniper Networks told us
00:05 they wanted to sponsor a video featuring the solution
00:08 to our problems, how could we possibly,
00:12 how do I go wrong with that?
00:13 So, they sent us over some
00:15 of their AP43 Wi-Fi 6 access points
00:18 and an EX4400 switch claiming they've done it.
00:21 They figured it out,
00:22 the future of networking.
00:25 And the hardware, that's impressive.
00:27 But the real star of the show is Marvis,
00:30 the virtual network assistant driven by Mist AI.
00:34 Marvis combines machine learning
00:36 and AI with a conversational interface
00:38 that understands natural language queries.
00:40 This should save technicians hours of time
00:43 that would otherwise be spent checking dashboards
00:45 and using other troubleshooting tools.
00:48 Certainly seems like a good idea, but what I,
00:51 and probably all of you also want to know is,
00:54 how smart is Marvis?
00:57 Smarter than me?
00:58 Probably, but we can't end the video here
01:01 so we're going to have to try it anyway.

01:13 So, we started by casually installing two
01:16 of their AP43 wireless access points
01:19 and these things are basically the bangin'-est.
01:22 I'm looking at the data sheet here.
01:24 It's like limited lifetime warranty,
01:27 got a humidity, and pressure,
01:29 and temperature sensor built into it.
01:31 It's Wi-Fi 6, but not just that,
01:33 it's 4x4, with four spatial streams.
01:37 Dynamic packet capture, automatic RF optimization,
01:40 high accuracy indoor location.
01:42 So it has Bluetooth on it
01:43 so you can actually tell exactly
01:45 where everything connected to it is.
01:47 It's crazy.
01:48 So, once we were done installing a couple of these,
01:50 we set up our wireless network
01:51 and added a floor plan,
01:53 which was surprisingly intuitive
01:55 and easy to use given
01:56 the ones that I have tried before.
01:58 And now we're just going to go ahead
02:00 and pull up the management dashboard,
02:02 which you can see scales beautifully across
02:04 my dual monitors.
02:05 Maybe we'll just make it a little bit smaller.

02:11 So, this one has nobody connected to it.
02:14 It's 'cause James isn't even here today.
02:18 And then this one right here has three.
02:20 Look at that.
02:20 Wow, you can actually see.
02:23 Woah, that is exactly where look,
02:26 that's exactly where Plouffe is standing.
02:29 Oh, so coming back to the floor plan,
02:31 we got a bit of a problem.
02:32 One of our AP's is flashing purple!

02:36 Click it, wait, oh.
02:39 Is Jake not done breaking it yet?
02:41 He's supposed to break it
02:42 so that we can see how to fix it.
02:44 That's the problem.
02:45 That's the problem when you're trying
02:47 to do a video about like, oh, troubleshooting,
02:49 is that usually things work from Juniper.
02:54 (laughs)
02:54 So, you have to kind of come up
02:56 with contrived ways to break it on your own.
02:59 There it is, now it's broken.

03:03 It's broken now.

03:07 Now, I'm not gonna give too many details
03:08 about how we're hand-wavy fixing this,
03:11 but I will say that this gave us a really solid clue
03:14 as to where to look.
03:16 And what we needed to do
03:17 was dig into our DNS server.
03:20 In this case that's the same box as our router.
03:22 And figure out, well, why the heck
03:25 that access point isn't actually getting
03:27 an internet connection.
03:28 And it turns out that the admin. (clears throat)

03:31 Fat-fingered a 3 where there should have been a 2.
03:35 So, now what will probably happen in a moment here
03:38 is it's gonna come back online.
03:40 Let's try and use Marvis for this.
03:41 I can't figure out how to reset it.
03:44 It should be working now,
03:45 so let's see if Marvis can help me with it.
03:48 Troubleshoot device, James desk AP.
03:51 Oh, that is so cool.
03:53 Look at that coverage heat map.
03:56 I like it.
03:57 Now that we fixed the problem,
03:59 I mean, we still can't connect to it,
04:00 because we can't tell it to reboot itself
04:03 and get new DHCP information
04:05 because we're not connected to it.
04:07 But fortunately, look at this.
04:09 It's all like, "Oh no, no Linus,
04:11 I have a problem. I am blinking yellow 6, 7, 7 times."
04:17 Then we're gonna go consult the handy key in the software
04:19 and find out what the devil that means.
04:22 Oh, look at that, okay.
04:23 It still says no DNS response.
04:26 Man, that is so perfectly helpful
04:28 to find the problem we had.
04:30 I'm just gonna go ahead and give it
04:31 a quick unplug and replug.
04:33 It's funny how no matter how much AI we add,
04:36 that's still the way to fix so many problems.
04:39 Did you try turning it off
04:42 and turning it back on again?
04:46 Let's give it a sec here.

05:03 but of course what I want
05:05 to know is who's wasting network resources
05:08 watching YouTube videos on their phones
05:11 when they should be watching YouTube videos
05:13 on their desktops?
05:15 I mean, I don't actually care if they watch YouTube videos,
05:17 that's scripted into the video by the writer.
05:20 but I mean it's sort of
05:21 part of our homework sometimes
05:22 to watch YouTube videos.
05:24 But they should do it
05:25 over a wire instead of taking up air bandwidth.
05:29 So I can say the site name is LMG.
05:35 "Can you tell me something you want to troubleshoot?"

06:24 Now it's time to do our next challenge here
06:27 and we're supposed to click
06:28 second challenge.
06:28 So this is a desktop computer
06:30 that's actually right
06:31 on the other side of this window.
06:33 And we go in here and nothing is immediately
06:36 out of the ordinary,
06:37 but, oh connected time, two seconds.
06:40 Oh, okay, hold on.
06:41 Client insights.
06:42 Uh-oh, we've got 66 total client events
06:46 with 15 of them bad.
06:48 So this is one of those things where you're
06:49 sitting at the help desk
06:51 and someone's like, "I can't get
06:52 on the Wi-Fi."
06:53 And you go, "Well gee let me have
06:55 a look at your device here real quick, Karen."
07:01 Oh, okay you got an
07:02 authorization failure over, and over,
07:05 and over again.
07:06 I think you might've forgotten your password.
07:09 So here's your password.
07:10 Write it down, but actually don't write it
07:13 down 'cause that's even dumber.
07:16 Most of the time it's not this cut and dried though.
07:18 So, you'll have things like a problem device that's
07:21 constantly disconnecting or running into issues.
07:24 So that's where being able
07:25 to sort by good client events,
07:27 neutral and bad ones is really, really useful.
07:31 And you can grab tons of great information
07:33 from the packet captures.
07:34 And Mist actually has this great dynamic PCAP
07:37 feature that's a blessing to anyone who's sick
07:39 of trying to replicate issues.
07:40 So it'll actually actively capture data
07:42 when an error occurs
07:43 and then store it in the cloud,
07:45 meaning that you've already got the logs
07:46 and you can access them without having to go on site.
07:50 Now let's head over to roaming.
07:53 Oh, there it is, roaming.
07:54 Oh, cool.
07:55 Okay. So here's a common issue.
07:58 You can actually see the roaming data between your access
08:02 points for that particular client.
08:04 So, okay Plouffe is usually
08:06 at the Mac desk and then I don't know,
08:08 maybe he had a meeting
08:09 with James or something and connected
08:10 to his AP,
08:11 and then he's back on this one.
08:13 So you can sometimes get
08:15 into situations where you've got
08:17 someone who keeps swapping bands
08:18 to 2.4 gigahertz
08:19 or they get terrible RSSI values
08:22 from certain APS.
08:23 And that's all nicely visualized for you.
08:25 Or if you have a device that keeps swapping
08:27 back and forth
08:28 from one AP to another,
08:28 which can cause kind of a high latency feeling for them,
08:32 or it can cause issues during video calls.
08:34 Something like this can really help you get
08:36 to the bottom of something funky that's going on.
08:40 Of course what we really want
08:41 to know is can all of this save me
08:43 or more accurately Jake, time?
08:47 Well, our APS are hooked up to an EX4400 switch,
08:49 which offers flow-based telemetry, power over ethernet,
08:52 PoE++, and fast PoE, microsegmentation,
08:55 and end-to-end campus fabric
08:56 for a ton of scalability.
08:58 So what this means for our next test
09:00 is that all the extra telemetry
09:02 should be able to tell us exactly what's
09:04 going wrong without us having to go
09:06 take a look for ourselves.

09:11 And what's supposed to be the problem with this one?
09:14 Oh. (laughs)
09:15 I could've figured that out
09:16 if I had just actually clicked on the thing.
09:19 Yes, we have 22 bad DNS failures.
09:22 Fantastic.
09:24 Now, a common mistake when setting up
09:26 a new mobile device on a network
09:27 is just entering the DNS credentials incorrectly.
09:30 You might think you entered it correctly while you're
09:33 just following instructions.
09:35 Famous last words.
09:36 But unfortunately, you were wrong.
09:39 I dream of the day when more IT tasks
09:42 can be handed off to someone less experienced,
09:44 like me, and there's zero worry about the network going
09:47 down because of a rookie mistake.
09:49 Wrong permissions, client can't connect,
09:51 network suddenly down.
09:52 So with Marvis and Juniper networks,
09:54 the idea is that your team can leverage Mist AI
09:57 to proactively notify and correct issues
09:58 before you get a ticket,
10:00 enabling your technicians to look like heroes.
