Customer Success Story
Virtual1 Expands Its Software-Defined Network and Services across the UK
To meet customer demand, Virtual1 wanted to add capacity and extend its coverage across the UK, while preserving the flexibility to offer new services.
Wholesale network provider Virtual1 interconnects all of the Tier-1 carriers in the UK, and many more internationally, providing its customers with an extensive range of global connectivity options. It sells its innovative services to value-added resellers, system integrators, and other service providers.
Business Challenge
Virtual1 wanted to build a software-defined network to extend its reach from 55 points of presence (POPs) to 280 POPs across the UK. It needed a flexible platform that would deliver a range of new services over a single connection and enable automation through a self-service provisioning portal.
Technology Solution
Virtual1 had already deployed MX Series routers to build its high-capacity core network, and EX Series switches in each POP. To create its new, nationwide software-defined network, Virtual1 chose ACX Series routers, which simplified access and aggregation architectures by eliminating unnecessary layers. The ACX Series also supports the full feature set of MPLS and Carrier Ethernet.
Business Results
Having its own software-defined infrastructure has enabled Virtual1 to be a true alternative UK-wide carrier. The provider has also lowered operating costs and boosted its flexibility to add new customers and innovative services. Through its self-service provisioning portal, customers have complete control of the solutions Virtual1 delivers.
