Enhancing the Network for Mobile Learning and Research
Aiming to reduce response-time slowdowns while establishing a world-class campus network, Yonsei University overhauled its switch backbone to support speeds up to 100 Gbps.
Yonsei University sought to relieve network bottlenecks that were becoming all too frequent. An overhaul of its Ethernet backbone did the trick, while also paving the way to high-bandwidth applications such as mobile learning, global communications, and large-scale research.
Business Challenge
Yonsei University found itself struggling to respond to rapidly changing campus network requirements, hampered by an aging system it had implemented in 2004. The school was already experiencing deteriorating service quality caused by system failures and traffic bottlenecks, and new higher-bandwidth applications were on their way. It was time to act.
Technology Solution
Juniper EX Series switches resolved the deteriorating service quality caused by system failures and traffic bottlenecks. The university applied 40 Gbps bandwidth to 10 major buildings with high network traffic and 10 Gbps bandwidth to the others. Shifting from three network tiers to two using virtual chassis technology improved network stability and management efficiency.
Business Results
The university can now scale capacity both by bandwidth and by port, allowing it to support mobile demand and traffic surges over time. Using virtual chassis technology in the switches has allowed the university to reduce management complexity and operational expenses.
