Meet exponential digital growth
To keep pace with exponential consumption of data and applications, UIUC upgraded its regional network backbone, enabling faster links between UIUC, and other university system campuses. The network supports university business, public Internet, and connects to research entities like Internet2 and ESnet. The network also provides transport for education organizations across the state.
Deliver denser 100GbE connectivity
UIUC has long relied on Juniper routing for its regional backbone with flexibility, reliability, and performance proven over many years. With demand for faster connections, the university migrated to Juniper Networks® MX10003 Universal Routing Platform for the large sites and Juniper Networks MX204 Universal Routing Platform for the small sites.
The upgrade allows the university to connect its campuses with data centers, cloud service providers and educational partners at 100 gig and with uncompromising reliability. The high-density MX10003 and MX204 router platforms enable the university to deliver connectivity more efficiently as demand rises.
Automation accelerates service delivery
Migration was straightforward. Juniper Networks Junos® OS facilitates automated operations, aided by strong community support. Automation empowers the team to do more with less and reduce repetitive work. Router configuration and validation tasks were automated, creating a more reliable network foundation faster.

The SDN-enabled MX204 Universal Routing Platform provides a modular, automated, carrier-grade solution for service providers and enterprises. The compact platform brings 400 Gbps capacity and a full feature set to space and power constrained environments.
MX10003
The SDN-enabled MX10003 Universal Routing Platform is built for space and power constrained environments. It is also a carrier-grade, multiservice platform with extensive automation capabilities enabling operators to meet ever expanding bandwidth, subscriber and service demands. The MX10003 Universal Routing Platform delivers 2.4 Tbps of system capacity in a 3 RU unit and supports 144 x 10 GbE or 24 x 100GbE interfaces in a single chassis.
