Customer Success Story

Connectivity that empowers teachers to teach and students to learn
Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview, located on Sydney’s North Shore, provides a Catholic education to 1,600 boys in Years 5-12. Founded in 1880, Saint Ignatius is in the midst of a masterplan to create contemporary educational facilities that encourage integrated learning and collaboration; a warm, home-like place for 320 boarders; and a welcoming environment for all staff, students, and the community.
A 24/7 residential school means maintenance windows are a luxury and misplaced laptops are a constant battle. Saint Ignatius chose Mist™, Juniper’s AI-native networking platform, to deliver exceptional digital experiences in its classrooms, boarding houses, and across campus while simplifying network deployment and operations.

To locate a student’s missing laptop on campus
“We wanted a cloud-first network that would support our educational mission and minimize network management over the long term,” said Brett Houghton, CIO at Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview. “We wanted to decrease our network deployment and management time. We found that with our previous wireless controller-based network, we needed engineering-level network skills to get access points plugged in and running.”
Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview was moving ahead with another vendor when it first considered Mist. In the middle of a 10-day POC, Houghton remained open to new options and Juniper delivered with speed.
“Juniper got our POC up and running in four hours,” said Houghton. “The time was so vastly different from the other vendor’s that it made me pause and rethink our decision.”
The college moved forward with Mist wired and wireless networking to deliver exceptional digital experiences for 2,100 students, teachers, and staff.

Secure AI-native networking across the 100-acre campus
With Mist, Saint Ignatius can bring together wireless access, wired access, and network access control under a common Marvis® AI engine and microservices cloud. Saint Ignatius deployed the network on campus quickly and securely, including at Wingaru, a new five-story science and technology building, and operates it easily with near-real-time insight into the user experience.
Juniper access points deliver predictable, reliable, and measurable Wi-Fi to connect laptops and virtual Bluetooth® LE (vBLE) to support asset location services and real-time network insights.
Juniper switches are used for the access networks that connect wireless access points, security cameras, and printers, as well as the core network. Deployment and management of the campus fabric is streamlined.
Marvis® AI Assistant simplifies operations and empowers the IT admins to find and fix problems quicker and more reliably. “Marvis helped us find bad cables and issues with DNS,” he said. “We just followed the trail.”
With a strong commitment to digital security, the college chose Juniper Access Assurance for secure wired and wireless access controls based on user and device identities. Access Assurance enforces Zero Trust network access policies for guest, IoT, BYOD, and school-issued devices. Cloud-hosted, microservices-based authentication simplifies IT operations by delivering a full suite of access controls within a flexible, simple authorization policy framework.

Empowering young men to reach their full potential
The Juniper network is foundational for student-centered learning at Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview. The school’s open, flexible learning spaces cater to the collaboration, connection, and critical thinking needed today. With fast, reliable access to both digital and traditional learning resources, students can become agile thinkers and problem solvers.
High-performance Wi-Fi supports hearing augmentation
Saint Ignatius students with hearing impairments can connect through their phones and participate in lessons using modern headphones, rather than traditional, bulky headsets, helping them feel included and engaged. Wi-Fi hearing augmentation—a requirement for new buildings in Sydney—demands latency below 39 milliseconds. At the college’s newest building, Juniper Wi-Fi latency was measured at just 11 milliseconds with performance 3.5 times faster for a better student experience.
Quickly locate misplaced laptops
“Six or seven student laptops go missing every week,” said Houghton. “Now teachers can simply open a support ticket and the Mist portal tells us the missing laptop’s last location, which is then sent directly to the student. It’s so much more efficient than before.”
AIOps improves the user experience and simplifies network management
With Juniper, the IT team has a single pane of glass for visibility and control over its wired and wireless infrastructure. Marvis AI increases the efficiency of applications and enable the IT team to simplify manual operations, which boosts their productivity.
